Reliable, Low-Maintenance Birth Control
A tiny, progestin-only arm implant that provides years of effective contraception—placed and removed in office.
Nexplanon is a matchstick-sized implant placed just under the skin of the upper arm. It steadily releases a low dose of progestin for long-acting, reversible contraception you don't have to think about daily. Placement and removal are quick in-office procedures using local anesthesia.

Why People Choose Nexplanon
- Set-it-and-forget-it convenience
- Cannot use or prefer to avoid estrogen
- Irregular pill use or travel/lifestyle challenges
- Desire for highly effective, reversible contraception
How Insertion Works
After reviewing your history and a pregnancy test if indicated, we numb a small area on the inner upper arm. The preloaded applicator places the implant under the skin in seconds. A small bandage and pressure wrap are applied. You can feel the implant as a thin, flexible rod under the skin.
Nexplanon vs. Other Methods
Nexplanon (Implant)
- 3 years of highly effective, low-maintenance contraception
- Progestin-only; no estrogen
- Irregular bleeding/spotting patterns are common early
- Quick return to fertility after removal
Hormonal IUD
- 3–8 years depending on device
- Often lighter periods or amenorrhea
- Placed in the uterus; strings for removal
- Office procedure similar in time to a Pap visit
Pill/Ring/Patch
- Effective with perfect use but needs routine adherence
- Some contain estrogen (not suitable for everyone)
- Easier to stop immediately if side effects
- No procedure required
Expected Bleeding Changes
Irregular bleeding or spotting is common, especially in the first 3–6 months. Some people have lighter or infrequent periods; others notice unpredictable spotting. We can often manage bothersome bleeding with short courses of medication or, if preferred, discuss alternative methods.
Removal & Replacement
Removal is done under local anesthesia through a tiny incision. The implant is gently delivered and the site is closed with a steri-strip and bandage. A new implant can be placed during the same visit if you want continued contraception.
Safety & Considerations
Side effects can include irregular bleeding, headaches, mood changes, acne, or breast tenderness. Serious complications are rare. We avoid placement during known pregnancy and review medication interactions that could reduce effectiveness.
Before Your Visit
- ✓Eat a light meal and hydrate
- ✓Wear a short-sleeve or loose sleeve top
- ✓Bring medication/supplement list
- ✓Use backup contraception as advised before insertion
- ✓Plan light activity for 24 hours to protect the bandage
