Premature menopause, also known as premature ovarian insufficiency, is diagnosed when a woman stops having her period before the age of 40, and we can show through hormone testing that she has the same levels as a postmenopausal woman would. That can sometimes be connected to other genetic problems, so it's important that you seek care if this happens to you so that we can make sure it's not from any other hormonal problems, but also to make sure that there are no underlying genetic issues causing it.
But perhaps most importantly, if a woman stops making her own hormones at such a young age, we really want to get in there and help you with hormone replacement therapy.
Hormone therapy in a woman who's undergone premature menopause is critical to help preserve her bone strength and has also been shown to help reduce future cardiovascular risk. It will also greatly improve your quality of life.
Please give us a call if this has happened to you. We are here to provide empathetic and compassionate care, but also evidence-based hormone therapy.
