Irregular periods are complex and frustrating for patients. The possible causes depend on your age. In young women who are teenagers, irregular periods can actually be a natural part of the maturing of the hormonal pathway in young women.
As women get older, sometimes irregular periods can be a sign of other hormonal abnormalities like PCOS, thyroid problems, extreme weight gain or weight loss. And as a woman enters her 40s and 50s, it may be a sign of perimenopause and menopause. Our job at Westside Women's Health is to help you figure out what's going on, and we'll do that through a thorough history and physical, probably a pelvic ultrasound, and often blood work. Once we figure out what's going on, we can offer you the right treatment and get you on your way.
